Why would you say google is so interested in people not deleting their emails?
I mean everytime, I delete messages from gmail I get a message: "You have over than 2GB who needs to delete messages"?

Two ideas come to mind:

First is just a marketing strategy. It could pretend just to distinguish itself from competing products. I have to say that before Yahoo expanded their Inbox, I had to delete and move lots of emails. As for HotMail, they made me lose so much information, I only keep that address for the messenger.

Second could be to help themselves build a huge database of language. Though one could argue it is not needed since they already have THE INTERNET, this could help them since emails could have specific language characteristics.

Other than that I cannot find any, excepts costs.

Addendum:
having read the previous posts, I could include the one that would consider the collection of all your emails as fuel for their ad-search engine to include Ads to your emails, that would be more appealing to you.

Because if you *delete* email in Google's email service, that deprives Google of *keywords* they can search so they can't send you *matching spam*.

Everyone does this....check this Question out once you pick a Best Answer, there will be Yahoo Search generated *ads* right below the Best Answer that fixate on two words in the Answer itself. But Google has made it a *policy* with their so-called free email service to spam people in accordance with invasive keyword searches of incoming emails. As in they invade what should be *private* email correspondance to find keywords for their ads.

So yeah, when you delete email, you are depriving Google of a target for their ads. :)

Maybe someday you will need that message.
It is just there to remind you that you don't have to delete messages to save space. You can always put it in some other folder in case you might actually need it someday.

The next time you will be posting something like
"I deleted my email from google. How do I get it back?"
