It varies. You can buy a set which includes the engagement ring and wedding band or you can just buy an engagement ring and purchase a suitable matching wedding band later.
Either way, go with a reputable jeweler not a department store, and DEFINATLY not Wal-Mart :D The little extra bit of money you will spend at a jeweler will be well worth it from the service they will provide.

It varies. Ask your gf what she likes.
It could be an engagement ring or an engagement ring/wedding ring set, which is two rings designed so that they are similar style and goes together. Some even have 3-piece sets for the anniversary band.

Hi,
An engagement ring is usually a solitaire that is given to announce your intentions to marry, then at the wedding you recieve a wedding band. That is the tradition. Many women only wear a band. Most have a set, with 2 seperate rings. Me personally I had my diamond remounted for my 10th anniversary into a single mounting. To me it is much more comfortable than to wear 2 rings. The nice thing is today anything goes , so you can do what works best for you. Congratulations!

It's usually two separate rings. Mine is custom made, so I had to give up my ring while the jeweler created the wedding band for like 5 weeks! (he had some health issues during this time) and I was a little upset with how long it took. They're now soddered together, so it is in essence one ring.

the engagement ring is one ring.
you might choose to buy an engagement ring and wedding band set. in this case, the engagement ring is worn until the wedding day when the wedding band is worn, either alone or with the engagement ring.
