My daughter is nearly 3 and a half. She doesn't have any problems sleeping or anything, but I'm curious to know how much sleep other children her age are getting. She's normally had 12 hours a night, but can she get away with less now?

she should have half hour to an hour during the day and from 10 to 12 hours in the night time. don't worry if she doesn't havea sleep during the day once she gets a good nights sleep she should be fine.

My oldest (28 months) sleeps from about 9pm to 8 or 9am, and takes a 1-2 hour nap during the day. She has always been a good sleeper, though: squabbles about bedtime - and even nap time - are really rare in our house. I do know, however, that she's gone through phases where she didn't sleep quite as much - and when she slept even more. Around 14 months is when she gave up the morning nap completely, and our situation at that time often prevented her from napping during the day (she was in daycare for 1/2 a day in the afternoons). Really, all children are different, and the amount of sleep one needs may be different from another. Is your son showing obvious signs of sleep deprivation? I do not think that between 10 and 12 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period would constitute anything serious for a child that age.. 6 hours on a routine basis, now that would be a problem. It would be fine for now to move his bed time earlier if he refuses an afternoon nap. I used to do that all the time when my daughter refused to - or couldn't - nap during the day. This is probably a phase that he'll outgrow with his next growth spurt (which will likely cause him to need more sleep), and that could come any time now. And let's face it, when you're 14 months old and jumping, running around independently, and getting into everything - sleep is a pretty boring proposition. Bring up your concerns to the pediatrician at his next visit, otherwise hang in there.... Good luck.

Since she is almost 4 years old 10 hours of sleep should be OK for her. You can try having her sleep a little less hours and she how she acts.
My son is 2 years old and he gets 10 hours of sleep at night and then takes a 3 hour nap during the day and that works for him and my 13 month old daughter.

My opinion is, if 12 hours of sleep is working for your daughter then keep with it.
Kids need a lot of sleep. There constantly growing. Take 1 or 2 hours away and see if that makes a difference in her energy and attitude.
I read somewhere that kids under 10 years of age need 10-12 hours of sleep a day.

Everyone should get 9 hours of sleep.I would say a toddler needs more so 12 is just about right I'd say. I live with a 5 year old he gets around 12 on school days and around 10 at weekends

12 hours a night is great. She should still be getting at least an hour or 2 of nap in during the day. You want to shoot for 13-14 hours of sleep total per day.

12 hours of sleep is good. Kids under 12 should get 8-12 hours of sleep depending on how they react. I'm 11 years old and I need 12 hours of sleep or I'll get REALLY cranky.

I think that a toddler should get a least 9 hours. And a hour for nap time, but 12 hours seems too much.

She should be getting about 10 - 11 hours of nighttime sleep and one 1 1/2 to 2-hour nap during the day. They NEED the daytime sleep, too!

my first child slept for 12 hours solid then again in the morning before lunch and then after lunch and i never woke them unlike the guidance from health visiters in todays age.

He is 14 and he still needs alot of sleep!!

My second on the other hand is so so different, but then i look at the size of them and my 14 year old if 5ft 8 and my 12 year is a midget lol lol, so my theory has to do with they grow when they are asleep. 14 year old puts himself to bed at 9pm has to be up 7am and sleeps again when he gets home from school.

She will sleep as much as she needs. Mine slept 4 hours and 12 hours, depending on what they needed. She is not capable of making that decision. Her body will tell her.
