There are three ways to say no. The first and most frequently encountered is "nein" (pronounced like English "nine"). A second form, used in more colloquial settings is "nee" (pronounced like English "nay"). A third form, which is not as frequently encountered, is "nö" (pronounced like French "noeud").

For an exhaustive list of ways to say "no" in these and other contexts, see http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=de&searchLoc=0&cmpType=relaxed§Hdr=on&spellToler=on&search=no&relink=on .

Yes can also be said three ways. The most frequently encountered way is "ja" (pronounced "yah"). "Jawohl" (pronounced "yah-VOHL") is also encountered, but more frequently as a response to a command. A colloquial way of saying yes is "jo", which is pronounced much like Spanish "yo".

There is a fourth way of saying "yes" in German: "doch" (which rhymes with the Scottish word "loch"). In terms of usage, it differs from the other three in that it is used for "yes" only in response to a negation--for example, in translating "No, you didn't"--"Yes, I did", "doch" would be used rather than "ja".

Various ways of saying "yes" can be seen at http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=de&searchLoc=0&cmpType=relaxed§Hdr=on&spellToler=on&search=yes&relink=on .

In German you could also say "nee" (ee sounds like a in [nay]) and it is used frequently in ordinary conversations.

Not sure how it is spelled, but it's nine, just like the #.
