Is it true that you need at least six months on your passport in order to travel. What is the home office advice for Britain?

The actual answer is that it depends on the country you are travelling to. Assuming you are British, you are allowed to leave and enter the UK as you please so long as your passport has not expired. However, typically, most countries you will travel to will expect at least 6 months left on your passport after your scheduled departure date. Most of the exceptions to this rule of thumb are European countries where they expect 3 months left or happy with a valid passport.

However, you can apply for a new passport at any time. If you apply 9 months before the expiry of your current passport, the Passport Office will simply add the unexpired 9 months to your new passport.

I definitely have travelled lots and that i'm particular that if there's a valid visa and the passport has not expired (even decrease than 6 months) then there is not any concern everywhere. FYI, in case you flow to any Consulate or Embassy and request them for a visa while your passport's validity is decrease than six months, then you won't get one. This of course ability you are able to not commute. desire that's obvious. solid success !!!!

some countries do specify that you have at least 6 months left on your passport. best to check with travel agent or online before you travel. theres a lnk to the government travel advice on www.open.gov.uk You can also renew your passport and carry over a few months from your old one.

It is purely down to the country you are travelling to.I am amazed how many people on this site dont know UK is in the EU or what that means as travel between most EU countries dont require passport unless you use air travel

It depends where you are travelling to- not from. Check out the embassy sites for your destination of choice or simply ask your airline.

You are going to need a new passport anyway- there is no time like the present.

Yes, I think you do. Otherwise you will be in trouble when you enter in a particular country. I think the reason is that most countries can grant six month stay without visa. These countries may concern that your visa expires before that time.
