I wouldn't use a light blonde or something totally the opposite of your hair color. The best thing to do (which has been in mags many times) is to only go 2 or 3 shades lighter than your base hair color for highlights. And always do something that is easily reversable, and not something you have to use bleach or something damaging to get out. I know all this from experience.
The less damaging way is to do a semi-permanant highlight. That way its totally reversable, and if you don't like it, u can get rid of it easy

It also depends on your skin tones. If you have cool skin tones, then you'll probably want a deep red or medium brown highlight. If you have warm skin tones, blonde would be the way to go.
Consider maybe a purple? There are certain brands that look black or dark inside, but when outside or under special lights they look amazing.

Blonde highlights would accentuate your face better.around the temples and framing the face.. Im not big on red but have a lot of experience with blonde highlights....I dont understand what you mean by not too natural though? You want your hair to look unnatural?

my friend has really cool hair i love it so much im jealous. her hair was originally dark brown like yours and she got it done a nice deep red and goldy blonde. it looks really good together! so get both.
you might want it to look natural at first and build up or something because if you go from brown to blonde really fast you probably wont like it at first. it will be too much of a shock. plus your friends might have a hard time looking at you without twitching.

I think you should do both...no one likes flat non-dimentional hair! get like a golden-y caramel blonde hilight, and whatever shade of red you like. Nothing too flaming red that would look silly, but maybe like a mahogany kind of color-or even a red-orangey tone if your up for it. make sure to find a good stylist and don't ever do it yourself!! (use good products too!)

if you want reddish i suggest putting a light auburn in your hair, or a bold red if you don't want it looking natural, after that i suggest you put some light blonde highlights over the red. hope this answers ur question. =]

Use a bleaching kit, don't use the scalp cap, it doesn't work, but a bleaching kit with a decoperizing agent will take the red out!
