NNW: You were commenting that "the famous people list (the Presidents) were schooled by highly educated people". Actually, the mothers on those list were not highly educated. The only mother I found on the list that was highly educated was the Wright's mother who had a college degree. I think it was typical back in the day, that women were not highly educated, yet home schooling obviously still produced a lot of success stories. Thomas Edison's mother was a teacher, which is a fairly typical background for many of us homeschooling parents.

I do know a lot of homeschooling parents, like myself, have teaching degrees and teaching backgrounds, but I think most of us will tell you that it is not essential for home schooling, since teaching mostly helps give you experience with 25 to 40 children rather than teaching the one to a few that is common in home school.

You also seem to be suggesting that homeschoolers are "evangelicals wanting to save their children from the sins of society" rather than educated parents as in the parents from the lists provided. You can go back and consult past Yahoo questions where people have asked why people are motivated to homeschool, but I don't think I have ever seen saving children from sin listed as a reason from actual homeschoolers.

I homeschool because we tried to for several years, and my dyslexic, autistic son was not able to keep up in the classroom. He was crying and having stomach aches each day. I was asked by his teachers (K & then 1st and then IEP panel) to tutor him with reading, math, handwriting, and then preteach his language arts. It was getting to be too time-consuming to do all the tutoring, school, homework, his occupational therapy, speech therapy, and the sports he wanted to do as well! My 6 year old son was begging to homeschool. We decided that it was probably a good idea, and it did turn out to be a relief and a good choice for us! I've heard many other reasons for hsing, and they are varied and usually because of the quality of the schools, or needs of the child, and/or serious reasons.

Yes indeed! Check the links someone else provided.

Understand that before the late 1800's, early 1900's, most people were homeschooled. They still became lawyers and scientists and presidents and generals and all that. Even as recently as the Roosevelts. Then school became MANDATORY in most places, or at least was seen that way, so nobody, really, was homeschooled for quite a while. It's now starting to change, so give it some years yet and you'll be hearing about more very famous people who were homeschooled, but more modern ones.

Just off the top of my head for people alive today, Christopher Paolini (Eragon) was homeschooled, Will Smith is homeschooling his kids (hires a tutor), Queen Elizabeth II was homeschooled (hired private tutors, of course, but she never went to school; as were probably some other modern monarchs; if Harry had been homeschooled, he probably wouldn't be quite so messed up today!).

Please keep in mind that the famous people list (the Presidents) were schooled by highly educated people, not evangelicals wanting to save their children from the sins of society (or from Harry Potter).

Karen,
I commend your needs for homeschooling. My quote regarding the evangelicals is based on a study showing that 38.4% of parents homeschooled for religious reasons (1999 study by the IES).
I firmly believe that leaving public schools because they are in bad shape is not an acceptable answer. Unless society works as a society and fixes the problem the educational system will decompose rapidly in certain areas.

I also appologize if my tone was insulting in any way.

Regards,

NNW
