I think from having watched UFC, that striking techniques practicioners tend to underestimate the power and NEED to learn ground techniques. He might be good (he did not have chance to show anything), but was surprised by the take down from BJJ.
On the contrary, since striking is more common grapplers are used to it, so they have an advantage there.

My son was in karate until one day I watched the trainer raise his leg over his head and I could just feel his pain. By the way, he was only six years old at the time, but the things he learned, like blocking a punch still help him.

i think it's a load of crap.i'm not a fan of shotokan,but thats a load of BS.
