The reason I asked is because we got a puppy a couple of months ago with ACA papers. After reading up on it, many people say that is a scam. He's 6 months old & no helth problems so far, but I am worried about his future health.

I wished I would have read up on this before, but I do not regret getting him. He is part of the family now and whatever it takes.....we're in it for the long haul.

No, there is no way to know if a breeder is a puppy mill unless you visit them or have a website to view. Also checking the akc website will not give you a list of commerical breeders. The breeders listed on the AKC website with registered kennel names are those who have been breeding for over a specified time and have had over 25 litters registered. I am a hobby breeder and have had listings on the AKC classifieds for years. I only have 1 or 3 litters a year. Talk to the breeder on the phone. Find our how many litters they have how many dogs they have.

It absolutely AMAZES me that people are sitting here spewing out how BYB's aren't as bad as puppy mills because the dogs are "cared for". I guess the misinformation campaigns that the BYB's put out there are working. Puppy mills breed animals commercially. Some are in cramped cages that you see on Oprah and on the HSUS web site. Some have dogs roaming freely on the grounds and some even, gasp, health test their animals. The point of puppy mills is that they breed tons of dogs. BYB's contribute FAR MORE ANIMALS TO SHELTERS than Puppy Mills do. Some estimates say as little as just over 50% while others say it's closer to 80-90%. Why? If there are 200 puppy mills and each one breeds 1000 dogs per year that's 200,000 dogs If there are 50,000 BYB's and each one does 'just one litter' and the average litter size is 6 that's 300,000 dogs! Ethically, any BYB is the exact same thing as any puppy mill - they just personally breed fewer dogs (well, some of them). There ARE BYB's who keep their dogs in little tiny filthy cages, make them live outside and birth outside, and who abuse their dogs. Take a look at all the loser "blue nosed pittbull" (sic) breeders. They have one litter a year and mom & dad live life outside on a chain covered in ticks and often with serious illnesses. They aren't puppy mills - they are BYB's. With the puppy mill backlash, BYB's are now filling spots at pet stores that the puppy mills used to get. My definitions of them are Backyard Breeder (BYB): Any one person/family who breeds their pet dog and is not actively involved in showing, competing, or working their animals. This person breeds titled dogs of bloodlines that are at least 50% Champion or excellent working dogs. Puppy Mill: Any large scale breeder that has a USDA license, or should have one. And I'll be honest here, I don't find much difference in large scale working breeders and puppy mills. 30 dogs kept in kennels with an hour of work here and there. People who train their dogs through fear and hitting.

Well maybe you should have done a bit of research BEFORE you got him!

Why do people spend HOURS shopping for a car, but a living breathing puppy they just by whatevers cute.

Live and learn, do it differently next time! We don't need more stupid anti-dog laws (that mainly hurt the GOOD breeders), to protect people from their own bad decisions!

You can get a list of commercial breeders from AKC, but there is no official list of "puppy mills".
