The ginger root itself has healing properties, and can be used for anything from a sore throat to an upset stomach. The ginger ale puts that in a nice, easy to drink, soft-drink form.

When you are sick, you are always instructed to drink plenty of fluids. Ginger root has been known to soothe upset stomachs. Carbonated drinks also help some stomach aches. I think that that's why people suggest that you drink it when you feel sick.

I was once told that it was because there was potassium or something like that that re hydrates you. Apparently 7up does the same.
