As the old adage goes...
Monday is for washing, Tuesday is for ironing, Wednesday is for sewing, Thursday is for baking, Friday is for cleaning, Saturday is for shopping, Sunday is for church.

Well how religious was she? If she was faithful to the sabbath then she may consider sewing work, and there is no work on the Lord's day.

Many people strictly observe Sunday as 'the Lord's Day' and refrain from work or activities they deem work. If you are familiar with the restaurant chain Chik-Fil-A (http://www.chickfila.com/), they are closed on Sundays (http://www.truettcathy.com/about_bio.asp) in accordance with the company president's (S. Truett Cathy) beliefs.

If she's a Christian it's probably because of Sunday being their Sabbath. It might also be the way she was raised. Old habits die hard and bring you comfort.
