In Canada, there are companies which collect data on cities and publish them in a "city directory" --- not a telephone book. This data is usually listed alphabeticaly street by street, and numerically on each street. For my city, these directories go back to the late 1800s. They are available at the university library, the city library, and the city archives. To discover the history of my home I started with the deed ... this told me the first year it would be listed. Then I went to the five years before that so that I could discover the pattern of growth in the area. Then I followed the ownership of the house through each year in the directory as well as when the neighborhood houses began to arrive. The city archives has more specific data on the owners of the house from the tax records. I can then check the newspaper data bases for those names to see if I can discover more about the people who lived in my home before me. However, most of this data is not online, and involves checking our your city's historical resources including: library, museums, newspaper, city hall, graveyards, and university. It's more fun, too. You actually see the original material. And... don't forget to look at photos. Often the above mentioned sources have photo files which may have pictures of your house... with or without people, and possibly with information written on the back. Also, look at maps... you may discover who/what was in your neighbourhood, as well as how transportation routes have changed. Happy hunting!

go to your nearest records office (the local council can tell you where it is) to view copies of census results to find out who lived there and what they did for a living... you can look online at:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/?homepage=fr-census
... but you may have to pay to access some information.
