She performed at the performances that she was contracted to do. Then she left so that the new Elphaba could take over the role. It was planned in advance.

Anger, frustration. A preformer feels in his/her soul the preformance. when that does not come across when the overwhelming passion can no longer be convayed to the audience its time to move on.
