Im an American and a friend told me you have to have a permit to own a rifle in Canada, but its ok to own a shotgun. Is this true?

As of 2006, no, long gun (shotgun, rifle) owners do not have to pay a permit fee or register. Law is apprently still on the books but not being enforced.

Handguns are another issue altogether. CLosely regulated and difficult to own.

You can own a hunting rifle, but you must get a hunting license if you plan to use it, and you can only hunt during a certain hunting season.
