Hey, congratulations -- you finally made it to the New Testament!
So, how about reading down to the end of the passage and see what the whole thing has to say, rather than just ripping one verse out of context?
Luke14:33 "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple."
In that sense, to "hate" your family doesn't mean that you want bad to come to them. It means that you can't put them ahead of your desire to love and serve the Lord. He has to come first, ahead of everything else.
You may not have to give your family up completely (although many people have been rejected by their families for becoming Christians), but you have to place Him first in your life.

An interesting question... Like much of what I read in the bible, I tend to look at what I think Jesus is trying to say. Probably that we must love God more than everything else or we cannot be a disciple.
I take offense when someone says "why pick out that particular scripture..." people pick and choose which scriptures they want to either follow or spout or questions all the time. One can't say the bible is the absolute word of God without looking at all the words. I don't happen to take the bible as the absolute word of God.
I happen to believe that much of the bible was changed due to translation and interpretation of the transcribers over and over again... much like the childhood game of telephone - the words and meaning change. Also, it is important to take into account the historical context of the writings.

Hey, whassup, dude.
I'm neither a "born again" nor an atheist.
I'm just a dude that's had a full, colorful life; a real hedonist and satyr that enjoys all the sensual pleasures life has to offer.
I was raised "Lutheran" if it matters, but as I matured, I sort of "internalized" all the religious stuff I had learned, and just found it satisfying to treat others with a modicum of respect and sympathy.
That includes both the pain-in-the-@zz charismatic Christians and the atheists, alike - although I have nothing at all against atheists.
You just seem to have some serious issues...
Please forgive me for sticking my nose in.
If we met in a bar, I'd probably offer to buy you a drink; maybe even invite you outside for a blunt, if I had one to share.
Some of the Christians - in their zeal and love of Jesus - can be a royal pain, but I try to not let them get to me; just like people with whom I don't agree politically.
So, don't let me interrupt your beating on the Christians. Lord knows some of them deserve it.
Others don't.
Of course, we have to remember where we are....

Yes. This simply means that our love for Jesus Christ should be of the utmost importance in our lives and that any love we have for others should pale by comparison. In other words, If Jesus Christ does not have first place in your life, above family and everything else, than you are not His true disciple. This is because He cares more for them than we possibly ever could. Our allegiance must be first and foremost to Him.

Modern word definition for ancient manuscript and idiomatic expression.. ... Here we go again.
PS: I freely admit, I have no idea what that could have meant at the time it was said, recorded, interpreted, or translated.
However, I do know that Jesus loves me, and he is even considering to love you. Remember he is your brother, not your Father. Your father in Heaven loves you no matter what you do or say. -- Proof: All good parents love all their children. However, sometimes a child needs to be quarantined away from the harmony-loving children.

Anyone can take one verse out of the Bible, and prove any point he chooses to. Twist and turn it and manipulate things.
But, if you take your verse and leave it in the context that the Bible says, you will stay straight with it. You have to read the other verses AROUND that one also, to know what the real sermon here is.

Love the sinner but hate the sin, those who do that are indeed disciples of Jesus.

No. Rather we should learn about the cultural context of the Bible and understand that Jesus was using semitic exageration. And you think you're so enlightened. Go read Kant's "Was ist Aufkaerung". Next question.

If you would read the entire section of the chapter that contains this verse, it's obvious that you're misunderstanding the verse. Try reading it in it's full context.
