A very popular destination for New Yorkers is Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are several direct flights a week. http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:Ys9-i8U56LIJ:www.tradewindscondotel.com/1_922_924.html+new+york+providenciales+flights&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=6&gl=us
If you are keen on beaches, then this is the place, as last year its beaches were voted the best in the world and it was also voted the pleasantest country in the Caribbean to live in (despite being in the North Atlantic!)

Dominican Republic has non stop flights from Kennedy (Jet Blue and American) and Newark Airport (Continental and American)

Dominican Republic is the most popular Island in the Caribbean surpassing Puerto Rico this year for the first time and there must be a reason for it.

If you are a Single guy go to Puerto Plata Airport and then Sosua. If you are sportsminded and young to to Puerto Plata Airport and to Cabarete. If you are filthy rich and want HIGH END Villa Tourism go to Puerto Plata Airport and Cabrera.

I own QuiXote's Restaurant in Sosua and it is more fun than you should be able to have and NOT go to jail!

Have fun

I would pick Barbados. There is something do just about any time of the year, there is little worries of hurricanes, the nightlife is good, and it's convenient to get around the island. The US dollar is widely accepted and you can rent apts/villas or hotels for just about any budget.

There are other islands with non-stop flights such as Trinidad, St.Lucia, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. St. Lucia is also very nice and very green. Trinidad has a lot of eco-tourism but if you're looking for nice beaches as well, you would want to hop over to Tobago (their sister island). You can also fly to St. Thomas and take a ferry over to the British Virgin Islands. Tortola, Jost Van Dyke & Virgin Gorda are close to each other. They are beautiful if you're into a more relaxing and scenic trip. The beaches are beautiful, though the nightlife is more limited.
