Hey!!! Someones kids are reading your filthy question!! Clean it up, your kids obviously have heard it all from YOU, so why are you worried about the grocery line?

There's really not much you can do, except maybe tell an employee and let them handle it. You could politely say something to the person but that may start an argument. I have been in that situation before with someone cursing loudly at the grocery store. Later I just talked to my children and explained to them that some people don't have home training and respect for others and I told them the reasons why they themselves should not behave in that way. Really the best thing for you to do is maybe leave the area if you can and explain to your kids why that person was inappropriate.

One night I was waiting, with my child, at a car-hop type restaurant. There were others in the lot with small children too. Two young men, one on one side of the drive, one on the other, were shouting back and forth using the "f" word among many others. I lost it! I got out and shouted my head off at them for being so disrespectful of those around them. They had a few ugly comments for me, but, man, did they leave that parking lot fast. I was so mad, so sick of persons who think they owe no regard to the general public...that I just wasn't gonna take it anymore. After they left, another parent approached me and thanked me for my stand.
I do know that it can be dangerous to "stand up" to these hooligans...and you will definitely receive some negative remarks back from them....but you have the right to tell these inconsiderate people to control their language in front of your children. It is still illegal, in most places, to use obscene language in public, so you can insist that the manager call the police in your behalf, and press charges. So few people do make the effort to stand up for their rights, in these types of cases, that the laws just don't mean much to the offenders. If we all start insisting that the laws be enforced, maybe, eventually, it will help.

One of the biggest jobs of parenting is protecting children, not only from germs and injury and sunburn, but from those words that they may not want their children to hear.

We don't plan to build a giant wall in outer space to block the sun's rays from burning the delicate skin of children - that would be ridiculous. We put sunblock and shade hats on the tykes. We don't force people with the common cold to stay locked up for fear that they might breathe near our children, that too is silly. We teach children not to touch things in public places and to wash their hands before they eat.

Similarly, we can't go around suppressing people's rights to free speech, so it's the parent's job to either remove the child from the situation, or cover their ears, etc. This is one of the things that makes parenting such a big job!

You might as well tell them the meanings of the words so that they'll know, because you aren't going to be able to protect them from hearing them. At least if they know the meanings from you, and that the use of such words is vulgar and rude, they'll be less likely to indulge in them, and won't end up with incorrect meanings from their friends or other "authorities." If you're feeling particularly audacious, you might IMMEDIATELY say something like:

" means ; some people use it because they are not very intelligent and don't know many words, so they have to keep repeating the same ones over and over again"

and be sure to say it in a rather loud voice... ;-)

You can't shield them forever. Whether you like it or not they are going to learn and hear swear words. All you can do is explain to your kids why you don't approve of using that language.

It looks as if you need to give your kids home study-avoid public schools & not take them out in the public, they will hear that stuff sooner or later unless you keep them home 24-7.

on the beachwalk i bypass to it is overrun with human beings strolling their dogs. often times even as i'm sitting there and they enable the dogs to smell one yet another, i am going to interject that it should be fresh to work out the vendors sniff one yet another even as the dogs look on. often times they chuckle and infrequently they provide the impact of being at me like I actually have 3 heads.

You can't....... unless you keep them at home all the time. The only thing you can do is to teach your children what words to not use. You can control your kids you can't control the environment they are in.

Nothing. talk to your children about what's appropriate. You can't change someone in line. They are liable to curse you in front of your children. I think that would be worse.
