Do you really need to love science to become a dentist ??? Question Details: I’m from Ireland. And next year is going to be my last year in school. I was thinking of going to study psychology or (dentistry if I get the grades I want) and I was thinking of going to the University of Manchester in the uk to do a 6 years course that does include a special year for students who do not have the science requirements to get into the course (did not do science at school) But you would have to do science subjects in your first year (in university). But at school the cover ever thing which is not to do with dentistry so if I do this course will it be the same as they do in school or will it just cover the parts which the need the most etc . I really need help with this. And I want good answers no fabricated (false) answers and I mean it. And I do like some parts of science (the parts which has a little bit of dentistry in it eg teeth etc ) Please

Hi there. My names Paul and Im a dentist here in Ireland.

I didnt like science in school! The course however is very interesting and if you want to do it go for it..u wont be the only one who didnt like science.

Science in school is broken down into Chemistry, biology and physics basically right?

Obviously biology is integral..the study of anatomy (not just teeth!) but the skull and skeleton ,the jaws etc its interesting..
Medicine ..obviously. Chemistry is included. Physics isn't part of it.
Its nothing like school, its interesting, rewarding and u will have a stable career at the end of it.

IF YOU ARE KEEN DO IT, YOU'LL BE HAPPY U DID AND YOU'LL BE WELL ABLE FOR IT.

Good luck

Science is the basis of medical specialties like Dentistry.
But it is not the most important aspect of it.
Dentistry, as mentioned by someone earlier, is more an art and trade than a science. It is more important how you relate to your patient and treat them well rather than the science of what you are doing. Patients don't care about the science, they care about whether you will hurt them and whether you are nice.
You have to be good with your hands, able to work with small objects, have a steady hand, and be very very patient.
Some of the best dentists around are totally hopeless at science subjects and if you ask most dentists nowadays they would struggle to recall their physics and chemistry knowledge.
The good lecturer at Uni will be able to make his subject relate practically to Dentistry, so even though it is a higher level than high school, it should be a lot more relevant.

well you do need to learn a lot of science, so in that respect if you hate science you probably won't do very well during a dentistry course. Yes there is alot of science/biology anatomy and physiology involved and if you hate that stuff then its gonna be a hard course to do.

Unless you become a researcher, a the end of your course, understanding the science behind your decisions is the only science you need to know to be a dentist. If you want to work in science then you should try being a scientist.

Here's the thing about psychology- its not going to get you anywhere unless you get a PhD. That can take 6 years. Being a dentist, pharmacist, or nurse is much more lucrative with many avenues or professions to choose from, and takes less money and time than a psych PhD!
You can do ANY class if you put your mind to it. I used to believe I was too stupid for science and math and was a psych major until last year. Now I'm working towards getting a nursing degree.

Dentistry is an interesting job. first of all you are your own boss if you own a clinic.
Science.. ! i guess this is something you shouldnt be worried about. dentist should be an artist, a carpenter, a doctor , should posses some hand skills, and needs lots of patience and patients ofcourse.
All of us have the basic from school. this is a professional course you will learn .. no matter what. all the best.

Ultimately yes.

In the interview for a Uni - an interest in the sciences is a must have and also scientific knowledge is important for the 1st and 2nd year of training.
