1st Timothy is written by the Apostle Paul. He introduced himself at the beginning. It is very important to keep things in context and to whom he was speaking to and why. He was writting a letter & addressing things that were of concern at that time to those people he was sending the letter to. Go back a verse or two and it says 2 Tim 2:8 I desire (I is the Apostle Paul) ... 2 Tim 2:12 And I do not permit a woman to have authority over a man. (again I in that verse refers to the Apostle Paul) Maybe he saw a problem with the women in that time & area that he thought best for them to keep silent.
The Apostle Paul also wrote 1 Corinthians. 1 Cor 7:12 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say:...
1 Cor 7:25-28 Now concerning virgins: I have no commandment from the Lord; yet I give judgment as one whom the Lord in His mercy has made trustworthy. I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present distress---that it is good for a man to remain as he is: Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you. (notice how he said he was giving recommendation because of the "present" distress)
Ever since Adam & Eve, women were to submit before men & not have authority over a man? How do you explain the later book in the Bible, the book of "Esther" who was Queen? :) As Queen she had some authority over some men? :)
Acts 2:17-21 Says that in the last days sons & daughters, menservants & maidservants would prophesy. <-that is not women being silent.
In the Bible it also says that there will come a time when they will not endure sound doctrine but heap up for themselves teachers that will tell them what they want to hear. <-- 2 Tim 4:3
If in a certain area & time, that the men were not teaching sound doctrine, do you not think God would allow a trustworthy woman to help guide? Some people seem to try to put God in a box & say what He can or can not do or use what or whom He can to further His purposes & that being the Kingdom of Heaven.

Again (for about the fifth time today), you rip a verse out of the Bible and don't bother to check other verses or the historical/cultural context of the time in which it was written.
When that particular verse was written, there were those women who were spreading false doctrine and heresy throughout the church, especially in Thyatira. (Check Revelation 2 for more information about the Nicolatians, a well-known group of heretics.) One woman in particular was causing a lot of problems. This verse was written to prevent the further spread of false beliefs among the very young church, which needed a strong beginning if it was to survive.
Also, in that particular culture at the time, for a woman to speak up in public was shameful, since only prostitutes were usually that bold. Paul didn't want the women of the church to gain a bad reputation, albeit undeserved, and that was part of the reason why he wrote this verse.
There ya have it -- the historical and cultural reasons for this verse.

If you're going to quote it, get it right:
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

this is only in the case of when men of god were teaching fundamental doctrine. the bible tells that men and women were equal in the beginning but because it was the woman fell to the temptation in the garden and ate first and then gave to man that a curse was put on the woman that man would be the authority over women.

Once again, not reading all of the chapter...just taking out what you can to make Christianity look bad. Man and woman were created equal then Eve messed it all up. Because of that women are to submit to men.

LOL...supposedly. Quite hypocritical isn't it? Of course you're probably opening yourself up to Jesus freaks who will call you stupid and state that when Jesus came he rendered the old testament as void.
The sad thing is that many people still believe this! The Torah and the Koran are almost exactly the same as the old testament of the bible. The Muslim and Islam extremists still believe that women should keep in full submission. It's sad because women make up a large success of this country today, and those countries are just cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

I try to follow Jesus' instructions, I do not let Paul speak for Jesus. Paul did say a lot weird things back then. I think he was writing personal letters that dealt with particular problems, in particular church organizations. I wonder if Paul ever thought his personal letters would ever be incorporated into a holy book?

things like this were written right when civilization first appeared in the b.c. times and along with that came old traditions and laws for example a lot of your native tribes have the same laws " sacrifices to the gods " and if you dont do it there will be doom and devastation, as time goes on and civilization becomes more civilized you will see less and less of it and more of a modern way of thinking
