A very fabulous vet on Yahoo!Answers by the name of "northern girl" suggested giving my Gia some gatorade or pediolyte, but I'm not sure of how much to give her. She's a 7 pound yorkie/shih tzu cross.

I have used none-flavoured pediolyte on my puppies for dehydration and also put it in the puppy milk instead of water. to know if the y need some pinch a roll of skin at the back of the neck if it unrolls slowly it is dehydrated if it goes quickly it is OK.but you have to find out why it is dehydrated

Depending on why your dog should be getting it in the first place would determine the amount. (Dehydration? loose bowels? recently sick and need electrolytes? why are you giving it?)

That aside Why would a vet tell you to give your dog gatorade? That is formulated for depleated active adults (with lots of sodium) and is no where near what a dog needs, especially an ill one. You should be giving electrolytes to it and only an animal version. They are cheap and available at any feed store or pet store. Much cheaper (not to mention safer) than gatorade. If for some freak reason you can't get electrolytes right away, use pediolyte but read the amounts listed for the ingredients and base amount on dogs weight and level of illness.

I hate to tell you this, but just because someone on YA says they are a vet, doesn't make it so. They could be a 13 yr old kid. Ask a real vet when your dog is sick. If it has something like parvo, gatorade or pedialyte are not going to help, except to help keep him hydrated. It won't stop the virus. Take him to your vet.

You shouldn't let your dog have drinks or people food because it could kill them.
