Forget MS Word. As the first two answers state go with openoffice. It's free and very good. It will allow you to create/open/edit/save MS Word documents. I use it in my business and highly recommend it.

Hello
If you dont have microsoft word, you may open any document with notepad. Right click to file you want to open "open with", "choose program" then choose program.
There is only one problem, you maybe may not be able to open all document's features like animations...
Good luck
