Send it through the regular mail system. It's all going to end up going into the military mail system anyway, there's no sense in spending the extra money for it to start out with UPS or FedEx. I always use the flat-rate boxes from USPS when I send stuff to my husband. They are unlimited in weight but if the item is bigger than the box that won't work. If it's something that can be taken apart or seperated into several boxes that would probably be the cheapest way to do it.
Nothing is going to make a difference in how long it takes to get there. It will take a few weeks, regardless of where it starts out. Regular mail will get there about the same time as express mail. I'd go with whatever is cheapest.

I would send it the cheapest way possible. Time will make no difference. It will end up sitting at the APO until transport gets enough mail to send overseas. When our kids were there we started using the flat rate boxes, for $8.10 to ship, it doesn't matter how much it weighs. We have 5 kids that were overseas and it saved us plenty. We weighed and ended up sending close to 1,100 lbs of stuff for the kids in one years time.
