It is the name given to a series of 3 stakes races for 3 year old Thoroughbred racehorses which is run each spring in the US. The races themselves are called the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. The races are run over a period of 5 weeks, with the last one, the Belmont, being run on the second Saturday of June. The Belmont is the oldest of the 3 races- it was first run in 1869. The other 2 races began in 1873 and 1875, respectively. Sir Barton was the first Triple Crown winner, and Affirmed was the most recent one. No fillies (female horses) have ever won the Triple Crown, though they also have a Triple Crown of their own. (The great filly Ruffian was a Triple Crown winner among her peers before her accident.) The races are run at 3 different tracks- Churchill Downs in Lousiville, KY, Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, MD, and Belmont Park on New York's Long Island.

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (Triple Crown for short, but the term is also used in other sports, and thus the full name should be used when it could cause confusion) consists of three races for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. Winning all three of these thoroughbred horse races is considered the greatest accomplishment of a thoroughbred racehorse. In recent years, the triple crown has become a very rare achievement (and in fact has not been done at all since 1978, although many horses have come close), with most horses specialising on a limited range of distances.
In the United States the Triple Crown is made up of:
the Kentucky Derby, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky;
the Preakness Stakes, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland;
the Belmont Stakes, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.
The Triple Crown starts with the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday of May. The Preakness follows two weeks later. The Belmont Stakes is five weeks after the Kentucky Derby in early June.
For a horse, winning the Triple Crown is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as all three races only allow 3-year-old horses to enter.
In the U.S., the term "Triple Crown" is the usual reference for these three horse races unless another sport is specified.
In 1930, Gallant Fox won all three important races, and sportswriter Charles Hatton brought the phrase "Triple Crown" into the American lexicon.
In the more-than-125-year history of the U.S. events, only 11 horses have ever won the U.S. Triple Crown; none since 1978.

Arrghh!! The Americans are at it again!
The ORIGINAL Triple Crown (first referred to as such in 1853) is made up of the 2,000 Guineas, The Epsom Derby and The St Leger. This was open to colts and fillies. The fillies had their own Triple Crown, made up of the 1,000 Guineas, The Oaks and The St Leger instigated at a later stage.
The purpose of the Triple Crown was to test the speed, stamina and soundness of the best three year olds. The three races take place over a period of 4 months (The 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas on the first weekend in May over a mile; The Derby and Oaks on the first weekend in June over a mile and a half; The St Leger in mid-September over a mile and three-quarters).
The last winners of the Triple Crown were NIJINKSY in 1970 (colts) and OH SO SHARP in 1985 (fillies).
These days it is very rare for a horse to be aimed at all three races, mostly because there seems to be some kind of stigma attached to colts winning The St Leger as most people want to use milers and sprinters at stud and not stayers.
The American Triple Crown is made up of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and The Belmont.

the triple crown is a series of three races for 3 year olds begining with the Kentuckey Derby,then The Preakness Stakes and the final race is the Belmont Stakes. It is very hard for one horse to win all three.There are some very great hoses that have like Secretariat but lately no one has been able to win all three.Huge crowds attend these races and it's a horseowners dream to win one. They are run in May and June each year
