could she have asthma? She shakes and gets all anxiety like when it happens. Today it happened more than usual, about every hour or more. Does anyone know what else it could be? I live in Phoenix, could it be the dust?

It seems to happen when she gets excited like going bye bye or a treat or playing?

My dog had that happen to her... and we took her to the vet. She had to stay overnight with an IV and everything. Not to freak you out, because my dog is fine now. But you should definitely go to the vet or a clinic for animals.

It could be a very common condition in small dogs called "reverse sneeze". Basically it is when the dog inhales through both their mouth and nose at the same time (causes a wheezy hacking sound). It is cause by a slight malformation of the palatte. It is harmless to the dogs. Now some people find that when their dogs are exposed to certain situations (like certain foods), it happens more frequently. My neighbors find that if one of theirs eats bread or corn (like chips), she has more problems than usual.

However it can be a more serious condition called collapsing trachea. A vet experienced with small dogs can tell the difference for you so you know if she needs medicine or if it is nothing to worry about.

Ok your dog has a colapsing Trahea ( if i spelt that right ?) basicall y the dogs wind pipe colapses & the weezing gasping is the drog breathing / trying to reinflate it .
It's common in toy/ small breeds my Shiba Inu has it also - it can be quite scary at times,
It can be surgericaly fixed - but theres no guarntees - Some vets reccoment to try coving the dogs nose - to help reinflate the wind pipe,,, if you try this donot hold the dogs mouth shut - if it seems uncomfortable with it don't force the matter , just pet the dog & talk to it to calm it down. I haven't fully figured out what triggers my dog I think allergies/ dust etc - & hayfeaver / spring hes worse - Try to monitor when your dog is set off & what happens before etc
good luck

you need to get your dog to a vet she could have a respiratory infection & you wont know intill you have it checked , dogs can get some of the same illnesses has humans do, i know a vet can be exspinsive but if you love your dog then it`s worth the peace of mind.
