West Lafayette has the better schools if you have kids. Usually rated 1st or 2nd in the state - according to the ISTEP (state testing) scores. Of course that is a result of the Purdue University influence.
The whole Lafayette area is nice though. Very low unemployment, good economic growth. The Subaru plant will also start to manufacture some Toyota models this year - increasing the employment base there.
There is crime - but relatively low compared to most areas it's size. I have lived in Chicago, Davenport, IA, Phoenix and now Dallas. I lived in West Laf. for 20 years, and still have family there.
I would never rate a city based on how many people walk into the Disney store. The mall is nice (remodeled about 10 years ago), with no vacant stores. Other good shopping also.
Great place to raise kids.
Also, less than an hour from Indianapolis and 2 hours to Chicago.
Traffic can be heavy at times. Especially after Purdue football games. But no such thing as "rush hour" like in bigger cities. Having lived in larger cities - traffic is a breeze in Lafayette.
Good Luck - God Bless

Lafayette has just about any shop, store, restaurants, a large mall, or anything that you are looking for in just about a few miles apart. It is a college town, and I think it is like any other town economy wise. As for moving there, I wouldn't. Did a craft show a few years ago and it was terrible. I was in front of Disney store and I think maybe 20 customers went it on that Friday. But that was 3 years ago.

The economy there is quite good considering it is an hour from Indianapolis. There is auto manufacturing, among other business and its still a nice quiet place to live with relatively low crime rate and good place to raise a family. There is also Purdue University. On the downside, winters can be rough.
