Are you sure it's a W-2 and not a 1099? On a W-2, the employer is legally obliged to take out FICA and to pay the employers half. If it is a W-2, talk to your employer and ask why this wasn't done.

If it's a 1099, then you're considered self-employed and must pay all the taxes yourself, including both halves of the social security and medicare, in addition to income tax.

Whichever it is, yes, you can and must file a return if your total income is higher than the limit for your status. If it's a 1099, you have to file if it's over $400. If it's a W-2, the limits vary but are much higher.
