I find it so hard to fight my depression and I feel like I don't know who I am or where I am going and I need to seek mental health, but I have 2 school age kids and I don't want to be sent away from them-does anyone know what the routine would be if I went to a mental health facility?

Are you in the UK?

Counciling is an option before you render yourself to the mental health team.

The mental health teams will talk to you about how you feel and try and establish if you are firstly a risk to your children. If they feel you are a risk to your children then yes they do often intervene.

If you are a risk to yourself then again they will intervene.

If you do decide to go to the mental health teams, beware of any drugs they may offer you. There are serious problems associated with drug therapy and are addictive.

There are many options open to you in seeking help for depression. I do not know what country you are in so unable to name any organisations that can offer this although MIND is a very good place online where you can get lots of information regarding depression and mental health problems. This is UK based but holds alot of information on their site.

if you are already on antidepressants and seeking counselling then a residential stay at a health care facility may be the only answer. I know that some places here in Australia accept children, but many believe that you need to be alone and away from your family in order to focus on your issues. You need to seek professional guidance about the best course of treatment as ongoing depression will be worse for your children than a short stay away from them and the return of a healthier mum.

Have you tried to go to a counseler or therapist? If you haven't you might want to start from there. I see a psychologist about my ADD and other problems, and it really helps to get all your problems off your chest. They'll also help seek the right treatment, whether it's medicine or therapy. There's no reason to go to a mental health facility unless a professional reccommends you do and counseling doesn't help you.
Best of luck to you. =)

Most mental treatments these days are done on an out-patient basis. It is in fact hard to find a hospital that will admit beyond a few days where medications must be administered quickly while out-patient treatments are arranged. So I do not think your fear of being separated from your children is warented.

go through a doctor first to get some medication,he will let you know where to get free counseling, but you must take that first step, asking for help is hard, and if not treated can get way out of control
