One of the more contemporary artists I love, who is still alive, is Janet Fish. She mainly works with still lives, and her paintings are gorgeous. http://www.artnet.com/artist/6229/janet-fish.html

One of the older artists I love is Alice Neel. She is absolutely my favorite ever. She worked with figures and all I can say is wow. They don't look like photographs, but theres so much expression and intrigue in them. http://www.aliceneel.com/pub.html
