Yes, you can request to be lying down when you have your blood drawn. In response to the first answerer, it has nothing do with how "great" the blood flow is ... for routine tests, blood is drawn from a vein, which leads the blood back to the heart. So either way, the blood will be flowing away from the needle and back towards the heart. The tubes that are filled during the venipuncture are vacuum sealed, so they pull the blood into them. Your blood does not simply "flow" into the tubes. Most patients who are admitted into the hospital have their blood drawn while lying in hospital beds, so this does not affect the test. All hospital and doctor's office labs should have a bed available where you can lie down ... sometimes this is easier on patients who are afraid that they might faint.

As far as whether or not it is painful -- most sticks are relatively painless and over quickly. It depends very much on the quality of your veins and the technique of the person drawing your blood. There are a few things that you can do to make sure that it is as painless as possible:
*RELAX! The tighter you contract your muscles, the harder it is to find suitable veins for the draw.
*Hold still. If you pull away at the last moment, the phlebotomist can miss and have to search for your vein or stick you all over again.
*Make sure that you are well hydrated before you are stuck. Even if you are supposed to be fasting, you can still drink water, and drink plenty of it! If you are dehydrated, it is harder to find suitable veins.
*Bring a friend with you ... someone who can hold your hand and talk to you the whole time.
*If, for any reason, you don't feel comfortable with the person who is drawing your blood ... request someone else. Don't worry about being rude, all of the staff are there to help YOU.

Good luck, and don't stress out about it! I'm sure everything will be fine!

It really depends on the nurse you have. I have really great ones where once the needle pricks through, they hold it so still I don't feel anything rest of the time. Other times I've gotten nurses who were either new or in a hurry and it hurt everytime the needle would move a bit. I was scared the first time I had to get blood drawn, but it's really not that bad. Just a sting when the needle first goes in, and if they hold the needle still you shouldn't really feel much after that.

I guess you can lie down while you do it. I have before but it was when I stayed in the hospital after I had my son so I was already in bed. Usually, there's this big chair you sit in and it has kind of this big armrest thing that goes acrossed it that you prop your arm up on while you get your blood drawn.

If you want a blood test lying down just ask. It doesn't hurt, just a pin prick feeling.

It is better to get it sitting up. Blood flow is greater that way, and it will be over faster. It hurts for a second. But if you look away, and close your eyes it hurts less.
