If I am currently on antibiotics for an ear infection (Omnicef), does this protect me from getting stomach flu or another type of infection? Does it protect you from all infections or just the one specific one you're taking it for? I'm asking because my husband has stomach flu or whatever it's called and I don't want to get it and was hoping I was protected while on the antibiotic!!

Omnicef is indicated for mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms for conditions of community acquired pneumonia, acute bronchitis, otitis media (ear infection), and sinusitis. This will not and does not prevent or cure a stomach virus or the flu. Antibiotics are for infections only! .Unfortunately you are able to acquire a stomach virus. Practice good hygiene as usual and you shouldn't have to worry.
Take care.

No. Antibiotics have no effect on influenza. It's a different type of germ You should never take an antibiotic unless specifically prescribed for your condition. This is because some diseases build up a resistance to antibiotics over time, and become less effective, or ineffective on some strains of disease. And if you are prescribed an antibiotic, finish the entire amount prescribed, even if you feel better. You need to kill off the infection totally, so don't stop until the whole amount is used. This will prevent a re-occurrence of the infection.
. Some antibiotics are specific for certain types of infections. There are antibiotic drugs that were invented and designed for specific types of infection. They might help with another type of infection, but they might not be as effective as another drug. You have to check with your doctor, or ask any pharmacist. They should be able to tell you more details about Omnicef, or suggest you ask your doctor about a better choice for infection.

Stomach flu is caused by a virus, so the antibiotics have absolutely no effect on them. (antibiotics work against bacteria)

The antibiotic that you're taking is engineered specifically to work against the bacteria that cause ear infections, generally staph. Just keep washing your hands, and stay away from your husband. You may still get it, but hygiene is the best defense.

Antibiotics will not protect you against viral infections. I would suggest staying as far away from your husband as possible and washing your hands alot!!
