I never cry in my counseling sessions - why?

The things i am talking about are not nice and yet i remain unemotional. My counselor must think i am very strange. Has anyone else experienced this?

i used to have counseling and i never did cry in there. not even over my own mother's death and i was only in kindergarton! maybe it's hard for you to cry infront of people. i can cry fine alone. or maybe the bad things that happend to you have still not sunk in and you are still in a state of shock. just remember, do not be embaressed to cry!
lots of luv and good luck!!!

Yeah, this has happened to me many times. When I was screened for learning disabilities, my tester reported me as being unemotional and not showing any facial expression. (Which is totally untrue. I'm the kind of person who loves to laugh, and I'm almost never expressionless when talking!) I guess this happens because you're talking to somebody who you don't exactly know well. When I talk to people I barely know, I don't laugh or anything because I'm afraid I'm going to make a bad impression or something. I also don't feel comfortable expressing my emotions to people who don't know me well. I can say my emotions, but I won't show them... That's how it is for me, at least.

I didn't cry in counselling for a long time, then WHOOSH! I started to cry when I would talk about stuff. My psychologist said because I had repressed it and was sort of desensitized from it. When I got more sensitive and started to not repress it anymore I started to react. But it is normal. It will come, and hit you like a ton of bricks. When it does, dang, it feels good!

I'm like that too. I can even be thinking about the exact same things we talk about at home and burst into tears but when i am with my counselor i dont really feel a whole lot. i dont really know why that is.

If you think your not crying in your sessions is strange and you are projecting that on your counselor I think you should mention those feelings to them. That could help them help you. Exploring why you do not cry could help.
