The Belvedere Hotel in Times Square - clean, staff is very friendly and there is a microwave and fridge in every room. You can get a good price at Orbtiz, PriceLine, etc.

If you don't mind sharing a bathroom, try The Gershwin Hotel on East 27th Street off Fifth Avenue (this is an exellent neighborhood). There are rooms for $50 or less. There are pictures of the room on their website, as well as their phone number, email and fax number. The neighborhood is excellent and the New York Times says the place is spotless.

If you go on www.expedia.co.uk and search for 'flight and hotel' and enter 'London' and 'JFK', you'll get a huge list of possibilities. You can click on 'sort by price' and get really good offers.

However, the cheap hotels tend to be in New Jersey or Queens which will (a) cost a lot of money to get into Manhattan each day, (b) take a long time and wind you up and (c) after a night on the town, you won't want to be arsed to travel all that way back home to the hotel.

My advice? If you really want 'cheap', then pick one of the Manhattan hotels or hostels that offer shared bathrooms. They're low-budget places (if you know what I mean) but they're in the city where it's all happening.

Personally, I'd rather pay £200 more for the week and stay in the Milford Plaza at W45th Street and 9th Avenue. Dead central and just the job!

Cheap for NYC is under $200/day. Try the Comfort Inn Midtown. Great location, reasonable price, basic breakfast included, free wireless, and decent cleanliness.

When I went I stayed in the Sheraton Manhattan, which was gorgeous, but I'm not sure how expensive it was.
