Helicopters,(which have jet engins, by the way) are slow compared to fixed wing jet aircraft. They can go straight up and down, sideways, yes - even backward. They can pick up and insert armed troops, perform reconasance at a speed and altitude where you can really see what you are looking for. If your loved one gets hurt, a helicopter will pick him/her up. No fast mover can do that - the Harrier you say(VTOL-vertical take off and landing)? No Too big a target. Choppers are the right size. If you are not allready impressed enough with why helicopters are used in combat - Dig this. Sometimes we go on sentinal missions, that is for the express purpose of drawing fire so we can bring the enemy out for the purpose of destroying him. The brass balls are not part of the helicopter.

Apache helicopters are by no means slow flying. I'm assuming you have never been to the middle east and in combat, but please, correct me if i am wrong. If you know anything about the physics of helicopters, you will know that they break almost every law of physics just to take off, and couple that with the weather conditions and combat environments and you get downed choppers. We just hear about it since this war is basically a reality show for you back home. I have been on many missions in blackhawks in iraq and have taken fire, that is my source, but you can believe what you want from the newsrooms at FOX or CNN, which never tell the whole story.

Helicopters can only fly a certain speed forward because the faster they go, the faster the blades have to spin. Once the blades start going supersonic it creates more and more drag (induced drag) on the helicoper. They have some newer blade designs that can go faster but overall they are limited to below approx. 150 knots. But they are extremely useful for carrying stuff around and shooting stuff. They are bringing into service the new v-22 aircraft that can rotate its rotor to land like a helicopter but fly like an aircraft where the blade speed limitation isn't a factor. It can fly almost twice as fast as a helicopter. This aircraft will bring a huge advantage to our military.

They're only slow all the time in the movies... in combat they are slow when they need to be... that's why they use helicoptors instead of airplanes in those situations...
