It's a very good question....maybe I can shed some light. What you are talking about here are "cognates" or "cognatos" in Spanish. There are approximately 50,000 cognates between Spanish and English, so..... too many to list here. A few examples:
information=informacion
verb=verbo
sofa=sofa
radio=radio
cup=copa
disc=disco (as in compact, or disco compacto)
dictionary=diccionario

These were just a few examples I got from looking around the room that I'm in. What's important here is that you have hit on a key factor in learning English. You can use the vocabulary that you already have in your head. (Puedes usar el vocabulario que aun tienes en tu cabeza.) I use this same technique in my Spanish learning. (I live in Mexico)

Some other key points:
1. Many, many adjectives work in this way. Be descriptive!
2. Many verbs also
3. There are keys....'tion=cion' in Spanish
'ly=mente' in Spanish (adverbs)
'ous= oso in Spanish (many nouns)

There are many more. The reason for this is that we share a mother tongue, Latin. Learn your prefixes and suffixes and what they corresppond to in Spanish and you will find yourself with a vocabulary that has increased tenfold!
