I'm assuming you're grilling the brats? Boil them in beer- doesn't matter what kind-, for 15-20 minutes. (You can also add onions to the pot if you like.) Use enough beer to cover the brats. After the "parboiling" you can put them on your grill. That's how we make them in the Midwest U.S.!

Soak em -- Cook half way on the grill then soak em again and finish on the grill - Basting is not a bad idea for the second grilling. Important -- do not use light beers for the soaking.

Beer-Basted Sausage
with Caramelized Onions and German Mustard
8 sausages, such as bratwurst, knackwurst or wieners
4 oz. Oktoberfest beer
2 oz. hot Dusseldorf mustard
3 oz. canola oil
16 oz. yellow onion, peeled, quartered and sliced very thin
Place canola oil in a large nonstick skillet (12-in. diameter) and add the sliced onions. sauté over low heat, stirring often, until onions are golden brown, soft and caramelized. Do not let burn. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and stir in the hot Dusseldorf mustard. Set aside. Prepare a grill, and cook sausages, basting with Oktoberfest beer every minute or so. Serve the grilled sausages with the mustard-seasoned onions.

After boiling in beer (as discussed in previous answers), be sure to grill over low to medium heat, and turn every 2-3 minutes to get them evenly browned, 12-15 minutes total.
