Sounds like your dog may have a urinary tract infection. That's extremely uncomfy. Do him a favor & go to the vet for a urine analysis to know for sure. A series of antibiotics should do the trick.

The most common reason for this is that the dog is not getting enough water. Fresh water should be available at all times. Not getting enough can cause serious problems like Dehydration, bladder and kidney infections, and muscle weakness just to name a few. They may need to go outside more but it the only way to keep them healthy. I know breeders that have killed puppies and dogs by restricting water so that thier dogs wouldn't have to go out as often or to keep the welping area cleaner. It is a real possibility that the dog already has an infection also.

RE:
why would a dogs urine be somewhat thick & dark yellow?

It could be dehydration but it could also be a urinary infection. Remember the kidneys and liver are supposed to clean out all the toxins. I would get a test done for both kidney and liver problems. If it is a simple case of dehydration the next question is why is the dog not drinking enough water.
hope this helps

Urinary tract infection and/or dehydration. Make sure your dog is getting plenty of water and call the vet tomorrow to have the urine checked for infections.

Bring the dog to the vet ASAP. I am sure the dog is in pain with an infection. OUCH!
