it's power delivered in phases 120 degrees out. You have three leads and a neutral sometimes . Mostly used in industrial applications due to, you have to have 3 phase service available. Three-phase systems can produce a magnetic field that rotates in a specified direction, which simplifies the design of electric motors.
Also house are supplied with 240 single phase (secondary is center tapped so you can get two 120 volt circuits or one 240 circuit for needs)and it is deliver to your breaker panel which is wired for two 120 volt feeds for house power. That's why you can get 240 or 120 in home breaker panels.

Electricity that's supplied to our homes is AC (alternating current), which means that the voltage varies as time goes on (if plotted as a graph, will look like a sin curve).
Now, two phase power is when a second current is also supplied alongside the first, but half a wavelength behind it. You can say that each wave is equal to 360 degrees, which means the second current is 180 degrees after the first.
If you take this to three phase power, it's just the same, but with each current started 1/3 of a wavelength (or 120 degrees) after the previous one.
Hope this makes sense - if it doesn't, give me a nudge.

Try ing to help the three phase system is generated by 120 degree apart electromagnatism with 3 wirs but dont be confused by the other answer all wirs are hot they dont take turns they have more voltage at times than each other. It is usually in industry because it is more economical

Simply put, you understand the concept of a positive and negative lead from a electrical source. That is 1-phase. 3-phase has 3 positive leads, each taking a turn at being 'hot' at very short increments.

a three-section unit typically has a 4-pronged plug, 3 wires for the three section skill, and a million for floor. Many households have 208/230V unmarried-section skill, so if the AC unit is meant for kin use, that is unmarried-section. If the plug in common words has 3 wires, truly one of that is the floor, that is unmarried-section. seem on the NEMA web site to make certain in case your plug is a 208/230V unmarried-section. Many business AC instruments use 3-section skill because 3-section automobiles are extra good and effective.
