Intercontinental transport by container boat is the most fuel efficient method with some ships achieving the equivalent of 1000 tons of freight 1 mile for 1 litre of fuel.Trains are very good too with each train carrying the same as upto 100 large lorries.

Sailing ships are 100% eco-friendly.

Driven purely by wind power, they could even generate their own supplies of electricity for heating, pumps, steering, lighting (etc), but not enough to keep them going for very long if the wind dropped suddenly.

That's the only real downside to sailing-ships, apart from the difficulties of raising and lower sails. However, modern materials may enable that to be done automatically, using rigid composite materials, as I believe has already been designed and used to some extent.

Update: Why a thumbs down? Would it be better with slave-power?

There is nothing really that transports goods from one country to another that doesn't have an environmental effect. We should start thinking locally and start redeveloping local economies and supporting local skills. Globalisation is terrible in the effect it has on the environment but it has mainly happened because it helped big companies to make bigger profit margins thanks to the exploitation of poorer countries!.

Transport using electricity supplied by Nuclear power stations. It is the only way until other forms of energy (which I think are being held back) are, by necessity, released.
