Dried spices should be tossed after about a year. They lose their potency. Whole ginger and nutmeg can be kept for a long time, but you need to have a grater (Looks like a rasp for woodworking). I have an herb garden and I freeze my fresh herbs. I just take out what I need and it is like I just took it out of my garden.

I have a neighbor who buys the best available spices from the "Tea and Spice" store, keeps them refrigerated and pitches them after three months. Most spices if kept free from moisture and sunlight will last a long time - 6mos to one year - unopened jars maybe longer. I do see a significant benefit to buying small quantities of your favorites to keep them as fresh as possible. Finely powdered ones like garlic powder, onion salt etc may be should be cycled more frequently than coarser ground or unground spices.

As of today I have some that are 22 years old and I still use them.
Experts say they lose their flavor after a few months but I use mine and I can still taste them so I beleive my tastebuds over what the "gods" say.

i would recomment not keeping them more than 5 to 6 months if you dont use them trow them away and buy new!
i like places that u can buy spices in bulk!!!
you can get as much as you want or as little as you want
that way your not trowing spices away and money away!!!
