no unless it is infected. Tooth and gum wil be sore from grinding, drilling and if your having a cap put on gum will be tender from getting the mold casting of area for the cap

The root canal procedure and pain always seem to go "hand in hand" and that's not necessarily the case at all.

In most cases the patient comes in with a severe abscess and the tooth has to be opened immediately to allow the infection an area to escape or drain. It's not always optimal to place the patient on antibiotics in those situations. So in those, yes it does hurt due to the fact that it is impossible to numb the tooth. An infection work against the anesthetic. In other words the infection kills the anesthetic before it can infiltrate through the tissue to the nerve, causing the numbing effect to take place. An anesthetic is always administered, always! So these are the patients that say "root canals hurt." When it's really the toothache that's causing them the horrible pain.

In the other cases, patients are placed on antibiotics prior to the procedure (or are having a root canal due to a reason other than an abscess) which greatly reduces the infection allowing the anesthetic to work. The result is a numb tooth that is much more comfortable for the patient. The only time you may feel any pain is when the nerve it's self is being removed (or anesthetic is applied directly to the nerve) and that sensation is similar to a sharp pinch that last only for a moment and is over before you have time to react to it. These patients usually wonder what all the fuss was about and why they were so worried about having one done. The procedure is time consuming after finding each canal, then there is the enlarging process of each of them and taking several x rays, before they can be filled. Most Dentist do the procedure in two visits. One to open and clean, the second to fill and close the canals.

Root canal therapy has a bad name due to the many patients who come in with their hands holding their swollen face, after having been up for days with the excruciating pain. These are the ones who say "root canals hurt" and they do in these cases. These same people are usually thankful and consider the Dentist their very best friend at that time.

As for either way, you may experience some pain from having the tooth worked on, so take the prescribed pain medication along with Advil or Motrin 600mg, before the anesthetic wears off. You can judge your pain level after that and take it as needed. Most people don't need it after the first 24 hours but the Dentist will want you to finish all of your antibiotics and return for any follow up appointments.

If this is any consolation to you, I had a root canal done (due to trauma) in between patients one day and continued to work the rest of the day. I'm sure you'll do fine, good luck and don't worry they are not the horror procedure most people say they are.

During a root canal treatment the dentist drills a hole into your tooth to remove the nerve (if it is infected or the tooth has died).

To be sure that he got everything out you won´t be given the shot to make you numb.

There are two possibilities:

1) Your tooth has died, then you will not feel anything
2) The tooth is still alife, then it will hurt lots and only stop once the nerve is fully removed.

My case was the first so it was easy, but my friend had a very painful treatment.

Good luck!

When you are so afraid of the root canal, then you should take care of your teeth by brushing and flossing regularly at least 2 times a day, and after every meal if possible. That will help you to avoid the need for any more root canals. Since you are all right with the Novocaine injection, then you know that there will be no pain. The drilling goes deeper , and takes somewhat longer, it is a little uncomfortable having a lot of things in your mouth, but there will be no pain. you will get a RX for pain medicine to take at home. If you have learned a lesson from this root canal, take care of your teeth and your oral cavity, include in your brushing the inside of your cheeks, your tongue and the roof of your mouth, and use Listerine mouth wash. This is the best way I know of avoiding dental problems, I hope you will apply it,in order to help you. Get well soon

Make sure to let the dentist know how anxious you are - some dentists actually specialize in people with anxiety about the dentist.

The procudure is annoying, but not painful. It will take a long time and your jaw will be sore. Do NOT be afraid to tell the dentist if you can feel anything. (S)he will listen and give you more novacaine.

The worst part about the root canal for me was the fear - the pain was very minimal. You're likely to be less apt to freak out if you don't look at the tools - they look scary but aren't.

No...it is like getting a filling.....they will give you novocaine, which sometimes smarts a teeny bit. They will touch your nerves to make sure you are numb after that.

My husband has just had 6 root canals this year, and has absolutely no pain.

Call your dentist and tell him you are very nervous. He will prescribe you some valium to calm you down....he will probably tell you to take 2 the night before the procedure, then take one the next morning within an hour of the root canal.

You'll do fine!

I work for an endodontist and to tell you the truth, the phobia of the word is what scares people the most. The best thing you can do is to be sure you're seeing a specialist, someone who underwent the additional schooling so to be sure that it will not fail in the future.Nothing worse than paying someone for something having it fail, and then paying a specialist to redo it right later. I see that a lot. You should also remember to stay calm. There are many people I see come to our practice terrified and leave wondering what all the fuse was for. Good luck!

I am getting a root canal done now. I am very surprised on how pain less it really is but frustrated on the amount of time and visits it takes to get one finished. Wait to you see the size of the needle.

the shot hurts a tad, but you should not feel the root canal at all. Just relax.
