I have TurboTax - the basic Federal version. It gives me the option of e-filing OR paper filing. I know the advantages of e-filing but may have to paper file b/c the software's missing a form. Please help below.

If I paper file, will the IRS be able to read the return, since it would be printed on my computer's paper - and not the MICR type?

There is no problem of the type you describe if you file on paper. I work for a CPA and we file every return on paper. Having said that, you almost certainly cannot use turbotax and tack on a form at the end. Almost all supplementary forms that you complete end with an income or deduction figure that flows through to the 1040, either directly or indirectly.

I think you will either have to upgrade to another version or seek out a professional preparer.

Assuming that you're using a modern laser or inkjet printer you don't have to worry. The IRS will accept your paper return printed on your home printer. Do make sure that your printer is working properly though. The IRS may reject smudged or illegible printouts if your printer is not printing properly.

Certain forms must be printed on special IRS approved or supplied forms. Virtually all of those are for employers and businesses, though, not for individual taxpayers.

If you are referring to form 8453-OL then heres what you do and then go ahead and e file. Turbo will send a message saying your e file has been accepted but you need to go back in and file the form I mentioned. When you go there they don't have it. Go to irs.gov and enter 8453-OL and it will pull the the form and you can print it out. Sign and mail, thats all.
When you print a copy of your turbo tax for your records you will see a number they give you, declaration Control Number (DCN). It will be on the last page of your print out. Good luck.

You can print the forms on normal paper, but you should try the electronic, and then it may reject and send you your missing form. (depending on what the form is)
