How DO dental nurses manage NOT to cringe at some of the things they see ?

Hi,

I'm a dental assistant (my name badge says 'Dental Nurse' but I much prefer dental assistant) and like many people have said - you get used to it.

I've not seen a vast amount of unpleasant sights, but a couple still stay in my mind and I am quite new to dental assisting, so I do still cringe at some sights, but I’m sure I will get used to it.

Sometimes, if I've seen an unsightly extraction, it often re-appears in my mind whilst I'm travelling home or while I'm day-dreaming, which sometimes makes me cringe just thinking about it. However, most of the time I'm fine during the extraction - it's afterwards when I think about it which makes me feel queasy. I often firmly grip my feet to my clogs, if it looks a bloody one, etc.

The worst part for me when I first started was when the dentist put the curette in the hole, as you could hear him scraping around. I have got used to it, now, though.

I thought I would not cope as well as I have done. I thought I'd be a lot more squeamish, but I'm not that bad, as I often see beyond the unpleasant sight and get on with my job.

This end is so much better than working on the other end. Plus, by cleaning teeth and educating people about their oral health, I'm helping their overall health. It really is a great job - and pays well, too.

you get used to it. The most nastiest thing is when people don't brush their teeth or floss, and stuff is caked on their teeth.
