I train in muay thai, but we have both a mixed and a ladies class..
I would recommend starting in the girls class untill you are comfortable enough to take on the guys, I enjoy doing a mix of both classes (2 of ea a week) as I found that at our school the ladies class focus's more on cardio & fitness and more pad and bag work, where as the mixed class focus's more on sparring and technique... I also find that the girls class there is usually not a constant group there, we have people join for a month or two then never come back, so we always have new people in the class which can get quiet frusterating after a while when your skills improve, as I noticed that alot of the new girls are very timid when it comes to punching and even holding the pads..which can get frustrating when you can't kick to your full potential and if you do some poor girl ends up on the floor a few meters away from you.. I usually partner up with my trainer now or the girls that are actually fighters..Although the classes are great for making friends and sociallizing, I would make sure that the boxing club you are going to have the ladies classes either structured in levels of competancy or have a mixed class when you get tired of the ladies classes.. But you have nothing to be scared about.. boxing can be quiet confronting, but stick at your own pace that you are comfortable with and you'll find that you will most probably have alot of fun and make new friends too..

Good Luck :)

my friend does that and says its quite fun. She said the only downsidei s the referee was a guy, so he thought they were going to hurt eachother and cry or something, so he kept breaking them up at the slightest contact.
