It only really works on very rare occasions. Look at how the folks in Hollywood change partners. If you're not near the ones you love, the connection weakens - even with family. The only way to really keep the bonds strong is to spend time with that person. Write long letters to each other. Discuss every little detail of your day, your hopes & fears, wishes & dreams. Writing letters keeps you thinking about your significant other and how you feel about them. Send them tapes of your voice and favorite music, so they can think of you while listening. Schedule several times a week to speak on the phone in private. Try to visit as often as possible. You can't go on forever like this, but it can definitely make a prolonged absence from the one you love more endurable. Good luck.

I have been in two long distance relationships in the past. One worked & one didn't. It's very hard to have a relationship when two people are living far apart. If it's only a few hour's drive away, it's better because a couple can see each other as often as time allows & get to know each other better. Another way to look at it, is no amount of distance between two people will matter if it's meant to be. My first long distance relationship didn't work because he was a player & he was also very controlling, & I wasn't about to put up with that. The second relationship worked, because he lived three hours away, made sure to see me often, & when he couldn't, he was in touch by phone & e-mails a lot. We are now engaged!!!

Good for you amyth54!!!!

I am in a long-distance relationship he lives in Alberta and I live in Illinois. We have been talking for 3 months and plan on seeing one another soon! He is so perfect for me and he says I am perfect for him. Sure there are obstacles but if it is meant to be and you really love one another it will come to be that you will physically be together sooner or later. Don't give up and keep hanging on. I don't date anyone else. I have no desire to. It is really not that far if you think about it. With all the conveniences of the world-really its not that difficult to work out! just keep in touch via phone and mail and email. instant messenger is good too. Send each other pics on the phone or computer, mail post cards to each other learn about each others "home". I actually like this relationship the best so far cause you really get to know the person!

If it is a flight away forget about it. How can you build a real relationship. If it is a long drive away, like couple of hrs meaning you can see each other once or twice a week give it a shot (1 year max if you never been married) good luck

i assume you are already IM'ing and calling on the phone, so just take things for what they are, no long term plans or things like those until you've had enough time together to be positive this is what you really want.

They don't work in the long term. Eventually you will need someone to actually be there.
