It isn't really the "type" excercise...
FIRST, find out what your maximum heart rate is. There are charts on the net that show this.
SECOND, in order to burn fat efficiently, you need to be doing ANY excercise that gets your heart rate within 65 to 70 percent of that maximum heart rate. This level, when adhered to for at least 50 minutes, is the most efficient way to burn fat.
You can get up to this heart rate percentage by WALKING for starters...you don't need any special equipment, it won't hurt you if you are just starting out, and it works your largest muscle groups (thighs and rear end), which, when toned, burn more calories when you are just sitting at the computer or watching tv.
For instance, if my maximum heart rate was 170, 65% of that is 110, and 70% is 120 beats per minute. SO, my target heart rate is 110 to 120 beats per minute. Maximum heart rate varies depending on your age.
While you are excercising, hold your finger to the vein in your neck under your jaw, and look at the second hand on a watch. Count the number of heartbeats in a 15 second period, and multiply that by 4 to get your total. Is that total within your target heart rate? You are burning fat efficiently.

In all likelihood, it wasn't stress itself that caused you to gain weight--it was the way you tried to "handle" the stress: soothing yourself by eating too much, which is what many of us tend to do when we feel stressed-out. It's the over-eating, plus not getting a reasonable amount of exercise, that does us in!
So, it probably doesn't matter very much which calorie-burning exercise you do--anything whatsoever will help you start to lose weight. Your best bet, however, might be to vary the exercises you do--aerobics one day, power-walking the next, etc.--so that you don't get bored.
But if you really want to lose weight, you also need to do something about your diet in addition to exercising. Even if you do nothing more than cut out one snack a day, or cut back a bit on the portion size of your meals, or substitute a lower-calorie dish for a higher calorie one--any reduction in your caloric intake, plus reasonably regular exercise, will really do the trick for you!
Moreover, you need to think about how you can better deal with the stresses you have been encountering--eating, as soothing as it may feel at the time, really doesn't have any lasting value as a stress-reducer, and obviously can only lead to other unfortunate issues. There are many books available that offer much good advice about stress-management. One that I myself have found to be very helpful is: "The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook," by Davis, McKay & Eshelman (available through Amazon.com and elsewhere).

Power walk. The aerobics is better for increasing your cardio capacity, but sustained activity at lower than your target heart rate is better for weight loss.

The best exercise is whichever one you enjoy the most, because that's the one that you'll actually do the most. If you really enjoy swimming, do that. If you prefer walking or jogging, do that.
I think technically aerobics is the best fat-burner, though.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
Get started today!
