If you have Photoshop CS you can download a free plugin from the Adobe site that will convert Nikon NEF files to DNG (digital negative raw format). - which can then be adjusted and saved by Photoshop. I believe the latest versions of Photoshop (CS-2) and Photoshop Elements will do the same thing, possibly without the need to download a separate plug in. - Photoshop CS-3 is supposed to be out in the Spring and it should easily do what you want to do.

Surely one came with the camera? Install that if you haven't done so already. I know, however, that the cheap program that Nikon supply is a bit ropey. If, however, you have Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro there are plug ins available free. You used to be able to get a freeware program 'Raw Shooter Essentials' but that was taken over by Adobe and I think as it a result it is no longer freely available, but only through Photoshop.
