it takes several things....when you have credit you need to keep your balances below 50 percent of what your allowed amount is. You need to be paying your electric, phone, insurance, credit cards, rent, etc. payments on time. You have to have been in one residence paying those for several years, and have a good paying job and have seniority on your job. If too many people have asked for your credit card information then that could hinder you. Have you asked for and received your once a year free credit report? I don't know if they check what other assets you have or your education, but that surely would be in your favor. Sometimes having too much credit is a hindrance.
Several years ago I tried to get a checking account here and was told I couldn't because I didn't own a house. So I would guess everyone has their own determinants.

I know how you feel. I was at the bank yesterday and they said my score was 798. They made it seem like it was impossible to have a 800 or more score. Usually there is a cap from a certain # like 750 and above that gets you the best rates and having over that is great but isnt going to help you more than having the bare minimum to get that rate.

My score is 820 and my husbands is 798 and I had to work really hard to get them this high over the last year. Keep your account open and use it regularly, but pay it in full each month. It's okay for the limit to be higher, as long as you don't get in debt. The higher limit actually increases your credit score.

I believe that 850 is the highest!
So you are doing great as it is...
Who knows what it takes to get over 800!
With the score that you have you should be able to get anything you want with a great interest rate.
I was able to get a tier two credit loan with a just settled defaulted student loan so I wouldnt worry to much about it as long as you have the income to support your purchase

First, you dont need over 800.
Second, your mistake was that you opened a new account, and thus lowered teh average age of your accounts AND got an inquiry.
But seriously, it doesn't matter.
