Not just as a Christian, but as someone who believes people all have the right to their own beliefs, I really want to know why some of you athiests or non-Christians love insulting believers. Do you consider yourself that intellectually superior ? Because really, your beliefs have no effect on how intelligent you are. I kno many smart Christians; just because we have faith in something that makes sense [to us] doesn't mean we don't understand science.

And it also seems that athiests are very intolerant on here. If a Christian acts a serious question directed specifically to other Christians, they always get answers of someone saying "God doesn't exist, duh." or "Wow you really believe that?!". & most importantly, why are you even in the Religion area of the site? If you are an athiest, YOU HAVE NO RELIGION! Christians usually don't do this to you, unless they are KINDLY spreading their belief. So spare me the anti-God lecture, I want to kno why athiests think they have this right?

If Christians are being rude to athiests, that is intolerant of them too, I agree. It goes both ways. But it seems like the Athiests are a lot meaner about it, while Christians are often just suggesting Athiests try church, in hopes they get saved. I agree those stuck-up churches who look down on everyone who isn't exactly like them are setting a bad example for us all. I'm more of a liberal Christian .. if that makes sense.

But one more thing .. to the guy talking about raping cows or whatever :: seriously dude, I mean their own beliefs within the law ? Its an amendment in our constitution. Don't be so ignorant, jeez.

Of course, I agree some Christians push their beliefs too far & that would be frustrating. But really, do you have to go to random questions on here that weren't directed to you or insulting you & tell the person that they are stupid & their beliefs are a lie ? That's totally unprovoked bigotry. Its one thing to sensibly explain what you think is true about religion, or lack there-of, & I would actually read a logical response explaining the facts behind another faith or atheism, so don't accuse me of completely disregarding other beliefs. Just because I'm not going to change my own doesn't mean I don't care about other people's. Its called tolerance.

Justagirl gave the kind of answer I was looking for. Thanks. & FYI .. I do not support Bush. Just because I personally would not have an abortion doesn't mean I don't think women should have the right to. That probably makes me sound like a hypocrite, but whatever. I respect open-mindedness regardless the religion.

And yeah, I take back the whole "KINDLY" statement that's causing so much controversy, because apparently many churches are really different from mine in the way of spreading their message. While I think explaining to someone how God can improve their life [what I've always seen Christians to do] is acceptable, I think its horrible to tell someone they are going to hell! So yeah, some Christians are just as bad I guess. It just seems like we have a little more good intentions behind it than someone who simply wants to make fun of Christians, but there are exceptions. This arguement sucks - - ugh whatever. Just please stop being so mean on here. The end.

will answer your question seriously.

I feel anger toward Christians (not ALL Christians or religious people, not at all) because of the political disaster that occurred in 2000 and 2004.

Prior to September 11th and Bush and the war, I think that athiests/agnositcs...were rather indifferent to religious groups and evangelicals - at least I was. I didn't think "they are stupid" or "how can you believe that", etc. I didn't even have a solid grasp on my own views about God, except that I knew in my heart that none of us know exactly what is going on didn't appreciate those who claim that they do (religious leaders mostly, not so much "believers". But really, it didn't bother me and I didn't think about it too much.

When the "Christian Right" and the Republicans started becoming pretty much one political and even worse, economical force in our country, and started doing things and "preaching" things that were abhorrent to me, I started to learn more about the evolution of Christianity, and the way some politicians used the power of the pulpit to do EVIL - and I mean really, really evil stuff. It's true and not a reflection on you, except that maybe you're not paying much attention to it (but I don't know that, I guess). Some of the worst of it is that until very recently, Christian leaders have been preaching politics and ESPECIALLY talking to very very large groups of Americans about global warming being a "myth", and that the "apocalypse" is happening, etc... which is in my mind one of the most dangerous viewpoints ever to exist and could kill us all.

So please understand that people like me are very angry at some Christians who seem to listen to "leaders" without questioning their motives or anything else. We equate this to the way you were raised to have "faith" and not question authority (generally). We didn't have anger or disrespect for your intelligence before - really, it didn't feel threatening. Now, we are SO MAD that so many people are keeping their heads down in a bible, waiting for Jesus to come back, when we KNOW that what happens in our country, and on earth, in the near future is up to us and not some supernatural power.

Remember, our President said that God talks to him. That makes us really angry and afraid for the world. We don't hate you and don't think you are "stupid". We just want you to think rationally and question your leaders.

Thanks for your question, I hope you understand where I am coming from.

There are two ways in which many Christians demonstrate that they don't understand science. First is a refusal to understand the concept of theory and how scientific procedure works. The second is the 'logic' they put forward to knock down evolution. I know very well that many other Christians understand science and scientific process just fine, I used to be one myself. But look beyond any question or response you see here to see if it isn't actually about 'creationism.'

What I see is that there is a tiny number of atheists who enjoy slagging Christians. There is a somewhat higher number who don't bother with many words in expressing their opinions. The rest of us have a lot of knowledge and experience in the field of religion.

I am an atheist, and actually I have two religions. Neither of which are 'evolution' btw.

Your assertion otherwise and, more importantly, your insistence that Christians are 'KINDLY spreading their belief' is the crux of the problem. A great many Christians, unfortunately the most vocal, are thoroughly convinced that they have a duty to tell the rest of us that they are right and we are wrong. If they have the right do to that, then surely a few people who think otherwise have the right to express their own viewpoints, regardless of the level of grace and sophistication they use in doing so.

I don't know why some atheists are rude to christians. Do you know why some christians are rude to atheists?

Everyone has a right to believe or disbelieve as they choose. However, I find that there are more believers who insult non-believers because they do not believe as the believers do. You can do the tally yourself. Count how many times some christians have told non-christians that they will burn in hell if they do not convert.

As far as I know, this is an open board, where anyone, christian, or not can and do participate. If you want to communicate only with christians, I suggest you log on to the exclusively christian boards (they do not allow non-christians from participating). Atheists have just as much right to participate in this open board as christians. A religion and spirituality board also encompasses those with no religion, hence atheists are here, just as they exist in the real world.

I have a question for you. Do you think that telling an atheist that he or she will go to hell for not believing the christian god is KINDLY spreading your belief?

Go to other boards. Look at how polite the "Christians" are. A student asks a question on evolution in Biology, and the next thing I see is some "Christian" calling me a liar and telling me I'm going to hell (and I'm not an atheist). I cite a paper disproving Creationist "Science", and I'm called a fraud. Then look at the complaints on the Gay, Lesbian... board. The fact that you see a few things on this board that you don't like (and I've certainly seen enough offensive things) doesn't mean that the atheists are any worse than any other group here. The board is about religion, not for the religious, so grow a thicker skin or leave Y!A.

I salute you for referring to "some" and not all. At least you acknowledge that not all Atheists are rude. However, I don't agree with your following statement:

"Christians usually don't do this to you, unless they are KINDLY spreading their belief. So spare me the anti-God lecture, I want to kno why athiests think they have this right?"

It could be true that some Christians inadvertently offend Atheists when trying to spread "their belief", but we have seen many postings here from Christians being rude not only to Atheists, but to other religion, especially Islam. Some of the Atheists who were not rude started being so after their pleas for tolerance fell on deaf ears (I accept that others are just plain rude).

I asked legitimate questions about Christianity, but some Christians went on to report me for abuse. I answered in a very civilisd manner to questions asked. Because some Christians were not happy with the answer, they reported me. This behaviour from some Christians is frustrating. While some Atheists make you unhappy, some Christians are not doing your complaints any good!

Finally, the forum is to to discuss issues of religion and spirit. It's not for people who believe in religion. There's a big difference in that regard!! PEACE!!!!!!

IT varies. It seems that there are those who come here to have fun and be mean, and those who wish to debate and learn. Assigning the "religious label" to the worst ones, though?... you would need to put this one on some of the immature Christian folks. I've noticed that the less intelligent Christians tend not only to be rude to the Atheists, but to the Muslims, gays, Jews, pro-choicers, liberals, and to other Christians as well. I've actually had a Christian complain to ME about this problem.

Don't put the immaturity of a few bad apples off on the rest of us. Unlike you, we don't move as a group. Each Atheist here has their own set of beliefs, and their own set of standards. There is no universal among us, as there is with your bible. Keep that in mind when dropping this question (I've answered this one at least a million times now).

Well, I'm on this area just because I'm following whatever I get after answering a question (I think this started in mathematics).

Yes, I am an atheist, but I have nothing against believers in anything that doesn't kill people. I think that's a much happier position to be in than my own, and I wish them all the best.

You do need to understand that for some of us it is simply impossible to believe in things that have no evidence to sustain them.

On the other hand, I see no point in attacking people who find comfort in belief so long as they do not attempt to force that belief upon others.

I've noticed it, too. I have also noticed Christians and Muslims being totally rude and obnoxious, too. Read MY BACK PAGES.

Youth, in their vigor, tend to sound just like their enemy the instant that they start to express their own position. They aren't experienced enough or eloquent enough to express their opinion except in an insulting manner. Kind of like "Oh yeah, well your fat!" in response to any criticism. Atheists do tend to be very, very smart individuals, though. This Hot-headedness and random confrontation thing gets better as you get a bit older. If you are still like that by the time you are in your late 20's, you're hopeless.

It is hypocritical to think that people won't respond in kind to anyone's comments when they are belligerent, judgmental, or otherwise argumentative.

If you stand up on a soap box and tell any culture, religion, group, creed, etc that you are superior and that they are rude, unkind, ignorant, and lesser than you, then you have permanently affixed your foot in your mouth. To that end, you have no right to complain because you're doing it too.

I have no desire to read Christian discussions, as it does not apply to me.

Just as you don't appreciate the lumping of all Christians into one category (i.e. everyone's Catholic, Presbyterian, heretical, radical, etc.) atheists don't appreciate it either.

I understand that certain people have a need for religion. I just don't. I don't feel the need to argue about it. You need it, fine. I don't, fine too.

But please don't go around spouting this kind of nonsense, as all it does is make a bad name for yourself as well as your religious affiliation.

You are currently part of the problem that you were complaining about - not the solution. Behave and have the same respect that you expect from others.

You just implied that non-Christian are not believers. This is incorrect, as their are many belief systems that have nothing to do with Christ. I think some people may find that rude, even though that was probably not your intention. Maybe you are interpreting others in the same way?
