Why did all the people in church today raise their arms up in the air when they sang? This was a contemporary service and I was wondering if that was the reason. I was a little scared.

there are several reasons for lifting your arms in church
1. you are lifting your arms to God.
2. you are saying to God I love you this much.
3. telling God that you are ready to receive his blessings.
4. opening yourself up to God to come and fill you with his presence.

and there are others, much as a child would do to its parents.
it is not a scary thing, it is a way of saying I love you.

Many people get touched and feel the need to raise their arms trying to get closer to the Lord. I find that to be comforting when it is real. Sadly, many people do it today for a show and just act that way like tv evangelist do.
