I am sure this questions can be debated to the end of time. For the most part the only person who can truly answer this question is the individual based on his or her own own beliefs and what they feel in their own heart. I suggest that you go into a quiet place of reflection (prayer, meditation, contemplation) and see what answers come to you with out too much of the mind stuff getting in the way. Try to listen to your heart.

Since you asked the question I will speak to you from personal experience. I had this situation occur with a family member. I asked the same question to many people including a priest who was a friend of the family who also asked his father another priest and theologian. They came back and told me that the discontinuing of medication or treatment to keep a person alive is not suicide. My cousin is also social worker for hospice and they deal with this question all the time. I suggest you talk to your local hospice office. They can send a social worker to your home and speak with the family about a persons options in regards to dying. The most important thing is that the person has dignity and the people that they love around them through this process. When I reflected on the question in my own heart the answer I got was that if the person is ready to go then they should be able to go. Naturally when people are old and close to death they will stop eating. This is not suicide but if you are in a hospital they will try to stick a feeding tube down your throat. There have been many people who were told that without treatment or meds that they would die and then they went on to live for a long time. Check out the obituary on Art Buchwald for inspiration. May the blessing be.

Yes. In order for this patent to die with dignity and not be considered "taking his own life" he would have to hire a lawyer to bring his special need to a court of law, judges handle these cases all the time. In the hospital setting the Medical review board and the patients MD's would decide along with the family. That's why family and patient should already have a "Living Will "dictating his "advanced directive" as to how far to go with end of life treatments etc. SW RNP
